This can happen in an unfinished basement, but cleanup and the related challenges are even more intensive when you have a wet basement that’s also finished with wet carpet, wood or tile.

When you do have water coming in a basement, it is important first to identify the reason for a wet basement floor — which will help you prevent it from happening again. It is equally as important to know how to clean up water in a basement so there’s no lasting damage.

REASONS YOU SEE WATER IN YOUR BASEMENT

When you have water coming in a basement, there is a long list of places to check for the leak. Here is what you should look for first:

• Window Well: It is always nice to have windows in your basement, so you can enjoy a little bit of natural light. If the levels of flooding are not severe, here are the steps to follow so your house can get back to normal in no time. If the flooding is severe, make sure to bring in the professionals to handle the issue. 

Here are some steps to take if your house is flooded: 

• Evacuate everyone from the premises as soon as possible once the flooding starts. Find a dry, safe spot away from the house while waiting for the flooding to stop. If flooding is caused by a natural disaster, call the authorities or listen to the local news to find a temporary shelter and relocate to that shelter when possible. Call 911 if anyone needs medical attention and make sure that everyone is accounted for and safe.
• Attempt to find the source of the flooding if it is not from a natural disaster. Stop it at the source, try to turn it off any faucet or seal it up; turning off the main water valve may also solve the issue.

Tips for Thawing a Frozen Water Pipe

It is very important to thaw a frozen water pipe as quickly as possible, however: it is equally important to thaw the pipe correctly to avoid it from bursting and causing a flood. After locating the frozen pipe:

• Open both the hot and cold faucet handles to help alleviate the pressure in the pipe and allow the water to escape once thawed.
• Begin thawing the pipe closest to the faucet and work your way down which will help to ensure that the melting ice is able to escape through the faucet.
• Several ways of thawing an exposed pipe is to use a hairdryer, heat lamp, portable space heater of hot wet towels. Never use an open flame and always remember to use the electrical devices according to safety regulations.

If the pipe has broken, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve which is usually near the water meter or the water main that enters the house. • Pipes will only freeze when it is cold enough outside to do so. When the temperature falls to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, it is time to take precautions to prevent vulnerable pipes from freezing.

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roofs shingles and into the structures interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

Icicles can be an initial sign of an ice dam, according to Travellers.com. To spot ice dams inside, “check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along the ceiling of exterior walls of your house. Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water has penetrated the rood membrane.”

Preventing Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes can cause major water damage

Being prepared and informed may help you to avoid the messy and often expensive issue of frozen pipes. Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the "strength" of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

Before the onset of cold weather, prevent freezing of these water supply lines and pipes by following these recommendations:

• Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
• Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
• Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
• Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
• Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
• When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
• If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters.  Conditions that cause floods include heavy or steady rain for several hours or days that saturates the ground.  This is especially true when the ground is still frozen or too dry.  Flash floods can occur in the country or city, where runoff from buildings, parking lots and streets can overwhelm municipal storm water sewers. Fortunately, you can help prevent the water damage that floods can cause your home.  Here are several flood control fixes you can make to help manage storm water runoff and prevent flood damage to your home:

1. Slope soil away from your home's foundation.               
2. Clean out gutters and downspouts in the fall and spring.  You can also use downspout extensions to carry water farther away from your foundation.           
3. Plug holes or cracks in you gutters, downspouts and downspout extensions.                                                
4. Set up a downspout to empty into a rain barrel.            
5. Look for holes or cracks in your foundation and completely fill them.                                                  
6. If your home is prone to flooding, having a sump pump installed is the most convenient flood control.      
7. Review with all family members how to shut off utilities in an emergency.
